Music is an integral part of the curriculum at Covenant College, and is offered as a compulsory, full year program from Foundation to Year 8. In the Senior years, students may elect to study Music if they desire, including at VCE level.
During a student’s Classroom Music Education, they use a variety of musical instruments such as percussion, ukulele, keyboard, guitar and voice to compose, improvise and perform. They listen and respond to their own music and that of others. Students experience, reflect upon and evaluate music of different times, styles and cultures.
We want our students to enjoy Music in a meaningful and well-rounded way, through practical, theoretical and aural activities. Students are encouraged to strive for excellence in their studies, developing their analytical skills along with their practical skills.
Covenant College offers two very special Classroom Music Programs- the Junior Strings Program and the Year 6 Concert Band Program.
The Junior Strings Program, currently offered at Year 2 level, is taught by an experienced Violin teacher using a combination of Suzuki and traditional teaching methods. During this semester-long program, students learn basic skills on the Violin and prepare musical items for performance. Students are given a violin to take home for the duration of the program and are encouraged to practice at home. Students develop listening and performing skills through collaborative learning, and always enjoy showing off their accomplishments to parents and friends at the final concert!
The Year 6 Concert Band Program is also taught by specialist Instrumental Music teachers. During this program, which is currently offered for a full school year, students work in small groups to learn instruments such as the Flute, Clarinet, Oboe, Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba and Percussion. Students also work together as a full Concert Band, developing practical and performance skills. Students learn to read music as appropriate for their instrument, and are given an instrument to take home for the duration of the program so that they can practice at home.
Covenant College offers a thriving Instrumental Music Program, where students can enjoy private or shared music lessons with a professional Instrumental Music teacher.
